Kylie Minogue: Aphrodite

We saw a terrific concert by Kylie Minogue this past week at the Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie. For those of you who don't know her, she's a huge pop artist pretty much everywhere in the world except for the USA. Originally from Melbourne, Australia, she has been a fixture on the dance pop charts for more than 20 years, with record sales approaching 70 million worldwide. In this country it seems that her main audience is gay men, who certainly appreciate a hot dance record.

"All The Lovers"

Anyway, the Dallas concert was our local stop on the "Aphrodite Live" world tour and the gays were out in force to support Kylie. We saw friends from the Diablos in the lobby before the show.

Kylie was at her upbeat dance-pop best, cranking out hits from "Aphrodite" as well as several standbys from albums past. The audience was in great spirits and it's very nice to see an artist on stage who obviously loves to perform, despite the non-sellout crowd. The production, costumes, and dancing were lavish and well-staged for the relatively intimate venue. At one point she took a request from the audience and did "Your Disco Needs You," probably my all-time favorite of her songs.

We ordered tickets several months ago through the very good American Express pre-sale program. Great seats were available very close to the stage, so we bought them before they became available to the general public. I love this program from AmEx and highly recommend it. Unfortunately this show was not a sellout. So let's hope Kylie had a good enough impression that she decides to return to Texas!
